S420NL plates and sheet are normalized rolled, high-strength low-alloy steel with a yield strength of at least 420 MPa. The chemistry is usually comprised of carbon (max 0.12%), manganese (up to 1.60%), phosphorus (max 0.025%), sulfur (max 0.015%), and microalloying elements such as niobium or vanadium to enhance toughness. The tensile strength is between 490 and 620 MPa with minimum elongation of about 20%. S420NL is engineered to deliver outstanding notch toughness at low temperatures (impact tested to -40°C) with good weldability and formability for cold-forming uses.
