Kovar plates and sheets are nickel-cobalt ferrous alloys that have a controlled coefficient of thermal expansion on the order of glass and some ceramics. The standard chemical composition consists of about 29% nickel, 17% cobalt, 53% iron, and trace amounts of manganese, silicon, and carbon. Kovar’s special composition enables it to stay dimensionally stable in a broad range of temperatures and create hard hermetic seals with ceramic or glass parts. It possesses a good mechanical strength, weldability, and resistance to corrosion, which makes it ideal for applications in precision engineering.
